Stretch Marks Q & A

What do stretch marks look like?

Stretch marks appear as indented lines on your skin. They come in many colors depending on your skin tone and their severity, including white, brown, red, pink, and purple. You can get them on many places of your body, including your:

  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Abdomen
  • Breasts
  • Upper arms

Your stretch marks may be hardly visible and close to your skin tone, or they can be large, dark, and very apparent. They aren’t harmful to your health, but they can make you self-conscious about your body and cause you to cover them when you can.

How did I get stretch marks?

You develop stretch marks when your skin stretches during periods of growth. Depending on your genetics, cortisone levels, and other factors, your skin might not be able to keep up with the rest of your body’s growth. But, losing weight too quickly can also cause stretch marks.

You’re more likely to get stretch marks if you are:

  • Female
  • In puberty
  • Pregnant
  • Overweight or obese
  • Using corticosteroid medications
  • Undergoing a breast augmentation surgery
  • Prone to weight gain

The best way to avoid getting stretch marks is to live a healthy lifestyle and avoid gaining weight. Gaining some weight during pregnancy is inevitable, but you can minimize your stretch marks by eating a balanced diet and getting some exercise.

What are my treatment options for stretch marks?

Many stretch marks fade over time, but there are a few ways to make them less visible in the meantime. Retinoid creams and other products can improve their appearance, especially if you haven’t had your stretch marks for a long time.

At Elite Aesthetics, Erin uses the Icon™ laser by Cynosure® to make stretch marks less apparent on your skin. The energy from the laser stimulates your skin’s healing abilities to heal your stretch marks by generating new tissue.

How long does it take to see a reduction in my stretch marks?

Each laser treatment session only takes about 30 minutes and doesn’t require recovery time afterward. You may need between four and eight treatments to see a noticeable difference. Erin assesses your stretch marks to decide how many treatments you should book.

Stretch marks look natural on your skin, but you might prefer a flawless, smooth texture that you can show off. To explore your options for stretch mark removal treatment, call Elite Aesthetics or book your appointment online at your convenience.
